Iron Sharpens Iron: Local pastors brainstorm responses to the problem of HIV/AIDS within their culture

A group of church leaders met with CAP Sudan at the Baptist Training Center in Akot on November 5-7. Aided by an obliging volunteer, CAP Sudan presented the full AIDS awareness curriculum to this multi-denominational gathering, allowing plenty of time for discussions.

The pastors discussed what the Bible has to say about sex and marriage and where that differs from current social perceptions on the subject. They also brainstormed changes that were necessary to prevent HIV transmission during cultural practices such as the ritual scarification of foreheads, which initiates Dinka boys into youthhood.

These leaders were challenged to take a stand in their churches and neighborhoods to educate people about HIV and to reach out with love and compassion to those who are HIV positive.

The group welcomed CAP Sudan to return in early December for a more extensive training that will certify them to teach the CAP curriculum to others in their congregations and communities.

Special thanks to our volunteer Jess who helped with the training!
